Fixed fares start at £45.34 in a saloon, with the £10 drop-off charge and all tolls included. A direct bus also serves this route and is cheaper for most journeys; we say so plainly on this page, and explain the cases where a pre-booked car earns its cost instead.

Route Overview

Braintree to Stansted Airport at a Glance

Braintree sits in central Essex, and the A120 connects it directly to Stansted Airport running east to west. One road, one turn at the airport approach. What makes it stand apart from every other route to Stansted is that the M11 plays no part in it.

Why "No M11" Is Worth Knowing

The M11 carries almost all Stansted traffic with very little parallel capacity. When an incident closes or congests it, every other approach to the airport is affected at the same time. Braintree's route arrives from the east on the A120 — a completely separate road. M11 problems largely do not reach this journey.

The trade-off: the A120 carries local traffic through Braintree itself, and a delay in town or on the dual carriageway sections can add time. But the scale of disruption is narrower than a motorway closure, and there is no multi-vehicle pileup scenario that blocks every alternative at once.

Both Directions

Braintree to Stansted and Stansted to Braintree

The service runs both ways on the same fixed-fare basis. Here is what differs between departures and arrivals.

Braintree to Stansted Airport

We collect from any Braintree address — home, hotel, Braintree Freeport or the surrounding villages — and take you direct to the terminal on the A120. The £10 drop-off charge is already in your fare with nothing to pay at the kerb.

For early-morning flights, a 06:30 departure typically needs a pickup around 04:00. Route 333 does run from around 02:35, which is unusually early for a bus — but it has no luggage hold, which matters if you are travelling with cases. We collect at any hour at the same fare as midday.

Tell us your flight time rather than a pickup time and we work backwards from the bag drop deadline, adding the 20-minute journey and a planning buffer.

Stansted Airport to Braintree

On arrivals, we monitor your inbound flight and set the driver's arrival against the actual landing time. A two-hour delay means the driver arrives two hours later — at no extra charge and without any action from you.

Your driver waits in the arrivals hall with a name board, helps with luggage, and takes you the 20 minutes to Braintree on the A120. 45 to 60 minutes of free waiting is included from landing — covering passport control and baggage reclaim at Stansted's single terminal.

The last airport bus departure is around 00:40. A late landing puts that in reach of missing, with no luggage hold at the other end anyway. At 20 minutes from the airport, a pre-booked car is a short one.

How Much Is a Taxi from Braintree to Stansted Airport?

The fare is a minimum covering the first 5 miles, then a per-mile rate for every mile beyond — both set by vehicle class. At 16.8 miles, the minimum does most of the work: 66% is the minimum and just 34% is the per-mile element. That is why all eight classes sit closely together, and why upsizing for luggage costs relatively little here.

Just £13.60 separates a saloon from an 8-seater MPV8 on this route. Because only 34% of the fare is per-mile, upsizing costs relatively little. If luggage is a close call between classes, it almost always makes sense to book the larger one here.

Honest Comparison

Taxi vs Bus from Braintree to Stansted

On a 17-mile route with a genuine direct bus service, this comparison is worth stating plainly. The bus wins on cost. We say so because we would rather tell you that than have you find out afterwards.

The direct bus runs every 30 minutes, around 36 minutes journey time, operated by First Essex with Central Connect also serving the corridor (routes 332 and 333). Bus fares are capped at £3 per single journey until 31 December 2026, then dropping to £2 from 1 January 2027. Route 333 runs from around 02:35 — unusually early for a bus, though the last airport departure is around 00:40.

Private Transfer (Us)

  • Door-to-door from any Braintree address
  • ~20 min · A120 direct · no changes
  • Fixed fare · no surge · no night premium
  • Luggage handled door to door
  • 24/7 · available when bus is not running
  • Flight tracking · 45–60 min free wait
  • Free child seats · sports equipment on request

Better for: luggage, early/late flights, families, groups, door-to-door speed.

Direct Bus (Routes 332/333)

  • ~36 min · every 30 minutes
  • Capped at £3/journey until 31 Dec 2026
  • £2/journey from 1 Jan 2027
  • Route 333 from ~02:35 — early but no hold
  • Last airport departure ~00:40
  • No luggage hold — cases in the aisle or on your lap
  • Cheaper at every party size

Better for: cost above all else, travelling light, flexible timing.

Our Honest Position — When to Take the Bus, When to Book a Car

Take the bus if: you are one person with a cabin bag, travelling at a civilised hour, with no checked luggage and price is the priority. At £3 the bus is a very good deal on this route and we would rather you knew.

Book a car if: you have airport cases, are travelling with children or a pushchair, need to leave before the bus starts or after it ends, have a group where the door-to-door convenience outweighs the cost, or simply want the 20 minutes rather than 36 with your luggage handled throughout.

A 06:30 flight means leaving Braintree around 04:00. Route 333 is running by then — but with no luggage hold, four cases travel in the aisle. That is the practical argument for a car on this route, not a cost one.

Choosing the Right Vehicle

Because only 34% of the fare is per-mile on this short route, the spread between vehicle classes is just £13.60. Size by luggage, not seats — and when it is a close call, the larger vehicle costs relatively little extra here.

Q: How far is Braintree from Stansted Airport?

A: 16.8 road miles, around 20 minutes on the A120 westbound.

Q: Does the route from Braintree to Stansted use the M11?

Q: Is there a direct bus from Braintree to Stansted Airport?

A: Yes, around 36 minutes, every 30 minutes, operated by First Essex with Central Connect also serving the corridor. It is capped at £3 per single journey until 31 December 2026, then £2 from January 2027.

A: No. Braintree is on a branch line to Witham, and reaching Stansted by rail requires two changes via London or Cambridge. Rail is not a realistic option on this route.

A: £58.94 in an MPV8, which is £7.37 per person door to door.

Q: Why is the gap between vehicle classes small on this route?

Q: What happens if my return flight is delayed?

A: We follow the flight and reset your pickup to the actual landing time, with 45 to 60 minutes free waiting — useful when the last airport bus goes at around 00:40.

Q: Is the Stansted drop-off charge included?

A: Yes. The £10 charge, up from £7 effective 19 March 2026, is covered in your fixed fare with nothing to pay at the kerb.
