At Heathrow it sets down at the terminals themselves: Heathrow Airport Central Bus Station for Terminals 2 and 3; at Terminal 4, outside the terminal; and at Terminal 5, outside the terminal. Coming back it runs the same road in reverse.
This is worth spelling out because several journey planners do not show it. Ask them for Hitchin to Heathrow and they will offer you a local bus to Luton and a second coach from there, which is two vehicles and a wait instead of one seat. Two route indexes we looked at do not list the 788 at all. If you have been told there is no direct coach from Hitchin, you were told wrong. Book it on the operator's own site, where the timetable and the seat map are the live ones.
The stop is in the town centre
St Mary's Square, not the station. If you are arriving by train first, that is a walk of about a mile back into the centre from the station, which sits a mile north-east of it.
Six journeys, not an hourly service
Up to 6 a day, so the timetable decides your day rather than the other way round. That is the single thing to check before anything else.
It calls at Luton Airport on the way
Useful to know, and it is the reason some planners try to sell you the two-stage version instead of the through seat you could have booked.
And the plain recommendation
For one person or two with hand luggage and a flight in the middle of the day, the coach is the sensible way to Heathrow from Hitchin, and we would rather you knew that from us than found it out afterwards.
We have checked this at every seat count we run and the answer does not change, so the price argument is not one we are going to make here.
The coach is cheaper than we are. That is true for one passenger and it is still true for eight.
There is no group size on this route at which the arithmetic turns the other way. Even at 8 people, where a car divides its cost the furthest it can, the coach is still the lower total.
Why we do not print a coach fare
Coach pricing moves with the date, the day and how far ahead you book. A figure typed onto our page in July would be quietly wrong by September. Look it up on National Express's own booking page for your date and you will have the real one.
What a car buys instead
It leaves from your door at a time you choose rather than at one of 6 fixed departures. It takes the luggage you actually have, including the awkward pieces, without a limit written on a ticket. It goes to the terminal you name and stops outside it. It does not mind a 04:30 start for a first-wave departure. And if your flight slips, we move — a booked coach seat does not.
When the coach is the right answer
Those advantages are real and they are worth money to some people on some mornings. They are not worth money to everybody on every morning. If the coach fits your day, take the coach.
Every fare is built the same way, from the same two numbers: a minimum that covers the first 5 miles, then a rate for each mile after that. Hitchin to Heathrow is 42.9 miles, so 37.9 miles are charged at the mileage rate.

Saloon and estate
Pick by luggage as much as by people. Four adults with four large cases do not fit a saloon comfortably even though the seats are there, and the estate at £82.36 is a small step up for a much easier boot.
Five to eight seats
Five or six travelling together are usually better in an MPV6 at £91.35 than in two cars. Seven or eight need the MPV7 or MPV8, and those are the only vehicles that legally seat that many.
Executive
The Mercedes E-Class at £104.22 for three or four, and the Executive MPV at £121.59 for six. These are the classes that carry a corporate account or a longer working day rather than more room.
What the fare includes, and if your party changes
The price you are quoted is the price you pay. It includes the drive, the drop-off and the driver's time at the airport. It does not go up because the M25 was slow, because you booked at four in the morning, or because your terminal turned out to be the far side of the airport. If your party grows after you book, tell us and we will requote against the same table rather than improvise a number.
Hitchin leaves for Heathrow going west, not south. That is the first thing to understand about this drive, and it is the reason the mileage is what it is.
The A505 and the M1
The usual road out is the A505 west towards junction 11 of the M1, then south on the motorway to the M25 at junction 21, then round to junction 15 for the M4 and into the airport. The A505 is the long east–west road running from Leighton Buzzard in Bedfordshire to the A11 at Abington in Cambridgeshire, and it meets the M1 at junctions 11 and 11a.
The A602 and the A1(M)
The alternative is east on the A602 to the A1(M) at Corey's Mill, junction 8, which is about 3 miles away and is the road most people here use for London rather than for the airport. On a normal morning the M1 approach is the quicker of the two, and it is the one we plan on.
How long to allow
1 hour 5 minutes to 1 hour 35 minutes is the band to work with. You will see a much faster single figure quoted for this drive, and it is achievable on an empty road at four in the morning. It is not a number to set an alarm by, so we do not publish it on its own.
If you have gathered quotes you will have seen this journey described as anything from 30 to 45 miles — a spread of 15 miles on a journey that is not much more than forty. That is not because the road changes. It is because some of those figures are measurements and some are estimates that were never measured.

What we price on
The middle of the three measurements, 42.9 miles. Every fare on this page is computed from it, and the sum is printed in the fare table so the figure can be checked rather than believed.
Hitchin station sits about a mile north-east of the town centre, on the East Coast Main Line, 31 miles 74 chains from London King's Cross.
Where the station is
It opened on 7 August 1850, built by the Great Northern Railway, and is served today by Great Northern and Thameslink. It has 2 platforms, both on the slow lines and long enough for twelve-car trains. The flyover north of the station, finished in 2013 at a cost of around £47 million, lifted the Cambridge line clear of the main line and is the reason the timetable here is as dense as it is.
The change at Farringdon
To reach Heathrow by train you change once, at Farringdon. A Thameslink service takes you south under London to Farringdon, and the Elizabeth line takes you west from there to the airport. Total rail distance is about 34 miles. This is not a through service.
How long it really takes
There are 218 trains a day towards the airport and 215 coming back. The quickest booked journeys are around 79 minutes outbound and 74 coming back — but those are the good ones. The average is closer to 136 minutes out and 121 minutes in, and the average is the number to plan on if you have a bag to move at Farringdon.
First and last trains, and when the train stops being an option
Outbound the first is around 02:47 and the last around 01:40. Coming back the first is around 04:15 and the last around 00:12. A flight that lands late is the case where the train stops being an option and a car starts being one, and a very early check-in is the same problem in reverse. Both are worth checking on the day you travel, because engineering work at weekends can rewrite the first and last hours of the timetable without changing anything in between.
A single from Hitchin to Heathrow costs about £24.70 a head at the time of writing. That makes the comparison easy to do and easy to publish.

One to three passengers
One person pays £24.70 against £79.27 in a saloon, so the train wins comfortably. Two pay £49.40 between them and the train still wins. Three pay £74.10, which is only £5.17 less than the car — at that point you are choosing between a small saving and a much simpler morning.
Four or more
From 4 people upwards the car is the lower number outright: four rail singles come to £98.80 against £79.27 for the same saloon. Beyond that the gap widens with every seat.
Why the fare is the same both ways
The rail fare is one fare in both directions on this route, so there is no cheaper hour and no trick to booking it the other way round. What you see is what it is.
What the sum leaves out
The rail figure assumes you and your luggage make the change at Farringdon without difficulty — a fair assumption with a cabin bag and a less fair one with three suitcases and a pushchair. Do the sum for your own party. If the train comes out cheaper and your day suits it, take the train.
Heathrow has four working terminals and from Hitchin they all come off the same approach, so the difference between them is minutes rather than route.
Terminals 2 and 3 — first from the north
Coming down the M25 you reach these first: leave at junction 15, take the M4 east to junction 4, and the tunnel under the runway brings you into the central area.
Terminal 5 — the furthest round
You can leave the M4 at junction 4b, or stay on the M25 to junction 14 and come in from the west.
Terminal 4
Uses that same M25 junction 14 and then the A3113 into the southern side of the field.
Why the fare is the same
The practical gap between nearest and furthest is about a quarter of an hour on a normal day. It does not change what you pay. The fare is the same to all four terminals, because the difference is small and because a price that moved by terminal would be a price you could not check before you booked.
If your terminal changes
Tell us the terminal when you book and check it again the day before. Airlines move between terminals more often than passengers expect, and the terminal on a booking made six months ago is not always the terminal you fly from. Your airline's own confirmation is the version to trust. If it has changed, tell us and we will change the drop-off at no charge.
Arriva route 100 runs through Hitchin between Luton Airport and Stevenage, calling at Luton, Stopsley, Hitchin and Lister Hospital.
Where the bus goes
It is a genuinely useful service, and it is the reason some journey planners think Hitchin has no direct coach: they see a bus that reaches an airport and build the rest of the journey from there.
Which airport, though
That bus serves the airport at the far end of the Luton Airport Bus Station name, not Heathrow. Riding it and then picking up a second coach will get you to Heathrow eventually, but it is two vehicles, a transfer and a wait.
What to use instead for Heathrow
The through coach from Hitchin Town does the same journey in one seat. If you are heading for Heathrow, the through coach or a car will both be simpler. If you are heading somewhere else entirely, the bus may well be the right tool — it is just not the Heathrow answer.
It is worth knowing which ones exist, because they come up in quotes from operators who handle them differently.
Ultra Low Emission Zone
Heathrow sits inside the expanded zone, which has covered the whole of Greater London since 29 August 2023, and a non-compliant vehicle pays £12.50 a day to enter it. Hitchin is well outside it. Our vehicles meet the standard, so that charge never arises on your journey and never appears on your bill.
The Congestion Charge
A separate thing again. It applies to central London only, it rose to £18.00 from the beginning of 2026 having been £15.00 before that, and this route does not go anywhere near the zone — we come down the western side of London and turn in at the M4.
The Dartford Crossing
The £2.50 charge is sometimes mentioned in airport quotes too. It does not apply here either, because the journey never crosses the Thames — it turns west at the M1.
What is in the quoted fare
What you are quoted is the whole number. There is no fuel surcharge, no airport entry fee added afterwards, and no separate charge for the driver's waiting time at the terminal on a normal arrival.
The return is the same road and the same fare. It is worth setting out how we handle the arrivals end of it.
Give us the flight number
We watch the arrival against it, so a flight that lands forty minutes late is met forty minutes later rather than met on time and charged for waiting. That is the single most useful thing you can give us, and it costs nothing.
Meet and greet, or the car park
A meet-and-greet inside the terminal is easier with children, with a lot of luggage, or after a long-haul flight where you would rather not think. A pickup from the short-stay car park is quicker to walk to if you are travelling light and know the airport. Tell us which you want, and which terminal you are landing at.
Why late arrivals change the sum
On the public transport side, the return is where the timetables bite. The last train that gets you home is around 00:12, and the coach runs to its own timetable of up to 6 journeys rather than to your flight. A delayed evening arrival is the classic case where the cheaper option on paper stops existing in practice, and it is the reason a fair number of our return bookings are made at the airport rather than in advance.

Each of those is a different distance to the airport and would be a different fare, so ask us for a quote from your own postcode rather than assuming the Hitchin number applies.

About a mile north-east of the town centre. This is where the trains are. The coach does not come here.
Hitchin (St Mary's Square)
In the town centre, beside St Mary's. This is where the direct coach goes from. It is also written as Hitchin Town on some timetables.
The address you give us
We collect from your own door. Pickups from the station, from St Mary's Square and from anywhere in the two postcode districts are all priced the same, because the mileage that drives the fare is the run to the airport rather than the half mile at the start.
Give us a postcode rather than a street name
Hitchin has a compact old centre with a lot of short streets, Tuesdays and Saturdays bring the market and the parking restrictions that go with it, and a postcode with a house number removes all the guesswork about which end of a road you are on.
A saloon takes four people and three cases, and that third figure is the one that catches people out.
Matching the vehicle to the luggage
The estate at £82.36 adds a much larger boot for a small difference in price, and the MPV6 at £91.35 takes six people with five bags.
Awkward items
Skis, golf clubs, a cello or a folded wheelchair all fit somewhere in the fleet, but they need to be mentioned when you book so the right car turns up.
Child seats
Free, and they need to be requested in advance, because they live at base rather than in the boot. Tell us the ages rather than the seat type and we will bring the right one.
