Before the transfer we owe you a straight answer. If your flight can leave from Gatwick, it usually should — and saying so plainly matters more than pretending Heathrow is the obvious choice, because for most Eastbourne travellers it isn't.

Heathrow needs at least two changes by rail from Eastbourne station (EBN), and the drive is around 80 miles. When Heathrow is still right
Long-haul and specific carriers — many Star Alliance, Oneworld and SkyTeam long-haul routes fly LHR only. If your ticket says LHR, we get you there.
A connection already ticketed through Heathrow — rebooking around a single ground leg rarely helps, especially when it breaks through-checked baggage.
Fare gap on the flight itself — if the Heathrow flight is materially less than the Gatwick equivalent, the ground journey usually doesn't close the gap.
A party travelling with luggage — four people with four cases save platform changes, last-mile taxis at both ends, and a two-change rail routing. One car, one price, one drive.

The rail comparison needs two numbers, not one, because the same booking site publishes two different fares for what looks like the same journey. Airbourne returns Thursday 13 to Sunday 16 August 2026 — its 32nd year, free to attend, hundreds of thousands of visitors expected (Visit Eastbourne, checked July 2026). Seafront roads and the A259 fill up. An airport pickup during Airbourne week leaves 30 to 45 minutes earlier than the same pickup any other week.
