Why the Tube Isn't Simple from Euston

Here is the honest hook that most taxi and transit pages skip: Euston Underground station is not on the Piccadilly line — the only line that runs direct to Heathrow. Euston is served by the Victoria and Northern lines only. That single fact shapes every rail journey from here to the airport, and it is why so many travellers underestimate the trip.

The lines Euston actually has. From the Euston ticket hall you can board the Victoria line (light blue) or the Northern line (black). Neither goes anywhere near Heathrow. The Piccadilly line — the dark-blue line that threads out to Terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5 — simply does not stop at Euston, so you cannot make a one-seat Tube journey to the airport from here the way you can from King's Cross St Pancras or South Kensington.

Boarding the Piccadilly line means a change. To reach the Piccadilly line you first have to get to a station that is on it. There are three sensible ways to do that, and all of them add time and a set of stairs or escalators with your luggage:

• One stop to King's Cross St Pancras. The neatest option: ride the Victoria or Northern line one stop east to King's Cross St Pancras, which is on the Piccadilly line and runs direct to all Heathrow terminals from there. It is a short hop, but it is still a change of platform with your bags.
• Or change at Green Park or Leicester Square. Heathrow's own guidance suggests taking the Victoria line to Green Park, or the Northern line to Leicester Square, and picking up the Piccadilly line there. Either way you are changing deep-level lines mid-journey — fine travelling light, less fun with two suitcases.
• Russell Square within walking distance. Russell Square, in Bloomsbury, is on the Piccadilly line and roughly a 10–12 minute walk from Euston. Some travellers walk it to avoid a change altogether — practical without luggage, awkward with it.

If You'd Rather Take Transit — Honest Options

We would never pretend a taxi is the cheapest way to Heathrow, and for a solo traveller happy to change lines the Tube is genuinely good value. Placed here, after the taxi, are the transit routes represented fairly, with times and fares to verify at source before you travel.

• Piccadilly line (via a change) — the cheapest. Once you reach it, the Piccadilly line is the cheapest route: around £4 off-peak on contactless (a little more at peak), direct to every terminal, taking roughly 50–65 minutes from central London. The catch is the change to reach it from Euston and the many stops, plus limited step-free access — a slog with heavy luggage but hard to beat on price for a light traveller.
• Elizabeth line (via Tottenham Court Road). Heathrow describes the Elizabeth line as one of the most comfortable routes. From Euston, take the Northern line to Tottenham Court Road, then the Elizabeth line direct to Terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5 — around 50 minutes in total for roughly £11–13. The trains are spacious and step-free with room for cases; the trade-off is the one change and a higher fare than the Piccadilly line.
• Heathrow Express (via Paddington). The fastest rail option, in two legs. Walk about 10 minutes to Euston Square, take the Circle or Hammersmith & City line to Paddington, then the non-stop Heathrow Express (about 15 minutes) to Terminals 2, 3 and 5, with a shuttle for Terminal 4 — roughly 45 minutes all in. Express fares are around £25 (cheaper booked in advance) on top of the Tube leg, so it is quick but premium.
• National Express coach (via Victoria). There is no direct Heathrow coach from Euston. You would ride the Victoria line to Victoria Coach Station and pick up a National Express service there — cheap, from around £6–12, with a generous luggage allowance, but well over an hour once you count the transfer, and a poor fit for tired arrivals or tight connections.

Euston to Heathrow: Tube, Elizabeth Line and Taxi Compared

The verdict — when each mode wins. If you are travelling light and watching every pound, the Piccadilly line is the value winner and the Elizabeth line is the comfortable middle. It is about 17 miles door to door. When the A40 or M4 is heavy, drivers use the A4 through Hammersmith and Chiswick as the alternative.

Delay points and timing. Off-peak the run is about 30–45 minutes; at peak, or during roadworks, allow up to 50–75 minutes.
